The English Premier League delivered another thrilling weekend of football drama, with Arsenal climbing to the top of the table after a commanding victory, while Liverpool suffered a heartbreaking late defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal continued their impressive form with a comfortable 2–0 win over West Ham United. The Gunners dominated from start to finish as goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard sealed the victory. The result marks Mikel Arteta’s 300th game in charge and sends Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table, capitalizing on Liverpool’s slip-up against Chelsea.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2–1 in a pulsating contest. Moisés Caicedo opened the scoring for the Blues before Cody Gakpo equalized for the Reds. However, 18-year-old Estêvão Willian became the hero for Chelsea with a stoppage-time winner that sent the home crowd into raptures. The defeat marks Liverpool’s third consecutive loss in all competitions, piling pressure on manager Arne Slot.
Manchester United secured a much-needed 2–0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford. Mason Mount broke the deadlock early in the second half before Benjamin Šeško doubled the lead. The victory eased the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim after a string of underwhelming performances in recent weeks.
Newcastle United were dealt a double blow as both Yoane Wissa and Tino Livramento suffered injuries. Wissa’s knee problem will keep him out for up to eight weeks, while Livramento faces a similar recovery period after being stretchered off in last weekend’s clash with Arsenal.
Manchester City activated the buy-back clause for goalkeeper James Trafford, bringing him back to the Etihad after a brief spell away. Meanwhile, the Premier League confirmed there will be a short international break from October 6 to 17, giving teams time to regroup.
The league also reaffirmed the continuation of the Saturday 3 p.m. broadcasting blackout, a long-standing tradition to encourage match attendance.
As the international window approaches, Arsenal sit proudly at the summit, while Chelsea’s resurgence under Enzo Maresca continues to gather pace. Liverpool, on the other hand, must quickly regroup if they are to stay in the title race when league action resumes later this month.
