Leaving a baby on their back (supine) too often, especially on a hard surface, can lead to positional plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome. This happens because a baby's skull is still soft and can become misshapen if they spend too much time in one position.
Thatβs why tummy time is important. It helps strengthen their neck, shoulders, and core muscles while also reducing prolonged pressure on the back of the head.
However, for safe sleep, babies should still sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
The key here is balance. Plenty of tummy time when awake and supervised, but always back to sleep.
