In a major move that signals growing English investment in European football, Burnley’s ownership group, Velocity Sports Partners (VSP), has acquired a majority stake in La Liga club RCD Espanyol.
The deal, reportedly valued at around €200 million, marks one of the biggest cross-border takeovers involving an English football ownership group in recent years. VSP, which is part of the ALK Capital consortium that owns Burnley FC, aims to create strategic partnerships across multiple European leagues to strengthen talent development and commercial opportunities.
According to a statement released by VSP, the acquisition will allow both clubs to share expertise in player scouting, data analytics, and youth academy development. The partnership is also expected to open new marketing opportunities and expand both clubs’ reach across Europe and the U.S.

The Spanish side, which has been working to regain its top-flight consistency, is expected to benefit from Burnley’s data-driven approach to recruitment and management. Football analysts believe the move could make Espanyol a key stepping stone for young talents seeking European exposure.
Meanwhile, Burnley continues to strengthen its international football network following its rise under manager Vincent Kompany, who helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
This acquisition highlights a growing trend of multi-club ownership models in world football an approach already adopted by global groups like the City Football Group and Red Bull aiming to create shared success and global synergy among affiliated teams.
