How to make money online in Nigeria as a student Fintech & Money Hacks

I used to think making money online was a lie. I watched my friends buying new phones and eating at nice places while I was drinking garri and waiting for allowance.

But then I found out the truth. The problem wasn't that there was no money. The problem was that I was looking in the wrong places.

The truth is that 75% of Nigerian freelancers are seeing their money grow right now. Students just like you are making between โ‚ฆ20,000 and โ‚ฆ700,000 every month. They are doing this while still attending classes. Today I will show you exactly how they do it. I will show you the methods that work and the scams you must run away from.

The truth about starting with zero naira

Many people think you need millions to make millions. That is not true. If you have a smartphone and an internet connection you can start today.

There are websites called "survey sites" and "microtask platforms." These are the easiest places to start. You do not need any special skill. You just need to answer questions or do small tasks.

One of the best ones is OpinionPadi. This one is built for Nigerians. The good thing about it is that they pay directly to your local bank account. You do not need to worry about PayPal. You can earn between โ‚ฆ200 and โ‚ฆ2,000 for each survey. Serious students are making up to โ‚ฆ30,000 monthly just from this.

Another strong option is Remotasks. This is the highest-paying site for small tasks in Nigeria right now. There are over 12,000 Nigerians working there. You help computers learn by labeling pictures or data. If you work 2 to 3 hours a day you can earn โ‚ฆ45,000 to โ‚ฆ150,000 in a month.

This is a good way to raise money for data or handouts without asking your parents.

Using the skills you already have

If you want to make bigger money you need to sell a skill. This is called freelancing. Freelancing is where the real money is hiding.

There are three main skills that pay Nigerian students very well.

1. Virtual Assistance

If you are organized you can be a Virtual Assistant (VA). You help busy business people check their emails and plan their day. Grace is a 21-year-old student studying Engineering Physics. She makes โ‚ฆ120,000 every month working as a VA. She learned how to do it for free through ALX Africa.

2. Freelance Writing

Nigerians are very good at English. We are ranked 30th in the world for English proficiency. You can use this to write articles for foreign companies. Beginners make โ‚ฆ50,000 to โ‚ฆ100,000 monthly. Catherine is a physiology student who earns $300 for every book she helps write. She said her only regret was letting people underpay her when she started.

3. Graphic Design

This one pays the most money but it takes time to learn. Korede is a Computer Science student who makes โ‚ฆ500,000 to โ‚ฆ700,000 every month designing graphics. He started with a job that paid him only โ‚ฆ5,000. But you must be careful. Korede admitted that his grades dropped because he sometimes skips class to meet deadlines. You have to balance it well.

You can find these jobs on websites like Upwork and Fiverr. Make sure you use your real Nigerian identity on these sites so they do not ban you.

Selling products without owning a shop

Maybe you do not like writing or designing. You prefer buying and selling. You can do this even if you do not have a shop.

Thrift Flipping (Okrika)

This is one of the cheapest businesses to start. You can start with just โ‚ฆ5,000. You go to markets like Yaba or Katangora and buy nice second-hand clothes. You wash them and iron them. Then you take nice pictures and post them on Instagram.

Hikmat is a Botany student who invested โ‚ฆ70,000 to buy products from China. She made โ‚ฆ25,000 profit in her first week. That is three times the profit on her investment.

Affiliate Marketing

This is when you sell other people's products and they give you a cut of the money. You do not need to buy the product yourself. You can join the Jumia Affiliate Program. They pay you 4% to 11% commission when someone buys through your link.

You can also use Selar. This is very popular for selling digital books and courses. They pay very fast usually within 24 to 48 hours. Some students earn up to โ‚ฆ100,000 monthly doing this.

Creating videos for the long term

We all see people making money on YouTube and TikTok. It looks fun but you must know the truth.

Making money on YouTube in Nigeria is harder than in America. If 1,000 people in Nigeria watch your video YouTube pays you about $0.30 to $1.50. In the US they pay $10 to $32 for the same views.

This means you need a lot of views to make big money. It usually takes 6 to 12 months before you start seeing any money at all. But if you are patient it pays off. Layla is a medical student who made โ‚ฆ6 million in 3 months creating educational content.

How to actually get your money

This is the part that confuses many people. You have worked hard but how do you get the money into your GTBank or Kuda account?

Do not use PayPal to receive money. PayPal does not allow Nigerians to receive money. If you try to use it your money might get stuck.

Use Payoneer: This is the best one for freelancers. It connects with Upwork and Fiverr. You can withdraw the money to your Nigerian bank.

Use Grey: This gives you a foreign bank account number. You can receive Dollars or Pounds and change it to Naira in minutes.

The danger zones you must avoid

The internet is full of traps. You must be sharp.

If anyone asks you to pay money before they give you a job run away. It is a scam. No real employer asks for money first.

Be careful of "Forex trading" and "Crypto investment" groups that promise you will get rich quickly. Many of these are scams. In 2021 Nigerians lost โ‚ฆ213 billion to schemes like this. If they say you should bring two people to bring two people it is a Ponzi scheme.

What you need to start today

You do not need a big laptop to start. A smartphone is enough for 70% of these jobs.

The biggest challenge you will face is data and light. Nigerian internet is expensive. MTN is reliable but costly. Glo is cheaper but might be slow. You should budget some of your first earnings to buy a power bank. It is essential because NEPA will disappoint you.

We have looked at many paths today. You have seen the free path with surveys. You have seen the skill path with freelancing. You have seen the business path with selling items.

The difference between the student who is broke and the student who is earning โ‚ฆ500,000 is action. The broke student reads this and does nothing. The successful student picks one method and starts today. Do not try to do everything at once. Pick one. Master it. Then grow.

Which one will you pick? Your journey to financial freedom starts now.
