Β Grimsby Stun Manchester United in Historic Carabao Cup Upset

Manchester United suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their modern history on Wednesday night, crashing out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town after a dramatic penalty shootout.

The match ended 2–2 in regulation, but the underdogs from Lincolnshire held their nerve in a marathon shootout, prevailing 12–11 to send shockwaves through English football. It marked the Red Devils’ first-ever defeat to a fourth-tier team in any domestic competition.

United were left reeling after a disastrous first half in which Grimsby seized a 2–0 lead. Charles Vernam opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, followed by a strike from Tyrell Warren ironically a former United youth player after another defensive lapse.

Manager Ruben Amorim’s side responded in the second half, clawing back through Bryan Mbeumo’s goal in the 75th minute before Harry Maguire equalised in the dying moments to force penalties.

What followed was a nerve-racking shootout that stretched to 26 spot-kicks. With both sides refusing to blink, it was Mbeumo United’s earlier hero who struck the crossbar on the final attempt, handing Grimsby a famous 12–11 victory and sparking wild celebrations among their travelling supporters.

After the match, Amorim apologised to Manchester United fans, admitting that his team β€œlooked completely lost” at key moments and lacked the character needed to kill off the game. He stopped short of blaming individuals but acknowledged that the result highlighted deep-rooted issues within the squad.

For United, this result adds to growing concerns about consistency and tactical discipline, piling pressure on Amorim just weeks into the season. For Grimsby Town, it was a night of history, pride, and belief the kind of giant-killing moment that will live long in League Cup folklore.
